Acer Palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Acer Palmatum 'Bloodgood'

Product Information
Holder of the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM), 'Bloodgood' is a vigorous variety of Japanese maple. Its beautiful lobed leaves are deep purple in summer, turning scarlet in autumn, Like other Japanese maples, it needs a sunny or partially shaded spot which is protected from cold winds. The soil should be moist but well-drained. It is suitable for growing in a large container, using John Innes No 3 compost, but must be kept well-watered.

Japanese Maples have a compact, rounded form that make them superb candidates for bonsai specimens. Alternatively, grow them in your landscape (or even in large terra cotta pots) as a beautiful focal point specimen. They respond well to pruning and are easily shaped. Hardy to -15°F, Japanese Maples are surprisingly easy to grow from seeds.

There are numerous Japanese Maple Tree varieties and cultivars. These seeds were obtained from Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood'. This variety can reach maximum heights of 15-20 feet in the garden and has a rich dark "blood red" leaf colour that holds its color throughout the summer. It is the most popular of all the Japanese Maples and it is also said to be the hardiest variety. Note that tree seeds do not reproduce exact replicas of the cultivar from which they developed. Usually strong resemblance is found among the seedlings and often seedlings from the same tree will differ from one another! This uniqueness and variation in leaf shape, colour and habit in tree seedlings is part of the enjoyment of growing these beautiful specimens from scratch.
